What can (and can’t) go in a disposal bin

Planning a cleanout or renovation? Here’s a quick guide to what goes in a bin, what needs special handling, and how to choose the right size.

A disposal bin makes a cleanout or renovation much easier — as long as the right things go in it. Here’s a quick guide. If you’re not sure about something, just ask; we’re happy to help.

Usually fine

  • Household junk, furniture and general clutter
  • Renovation debris: drywall, wood, trim, flooring, cabinets
  • Yard waste: branches, brush, sod and old landscaping
  • Heavy material like concrete, brick, stone, dirt and shingles — in the right bin size, because of weight limits

Needs special handling

These items usually can’t go in a standard bin because they need to be recycled or disposed of separately:

  • Paint, solvents, oils and other household chemicals
  • Propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders
  • Batteries and electronics
  • Tires
  • Fridges, freezers and air conditioners (they contain refrigerant)
  • Asbestos or anything you suspect may contain it

Let us know what you have. In many cases our crew can take it away separately as part of the job.

Choosing a size

Smaller bins suit a single room, garage cleanout or heavy material such as concrete or shingles. Larger bins are for full renovations, estate cleanouts and bulky but light loads. Tell us about the job and we’ll recommend the right size. See bin sizes →
